GRASSLAND
In St Eval Parish this is the highest ground around the church and Downhill and Trevisker/St Eval Estate. In its natural state it is wildflower rich dry grassland with low nutrients and thin soil over rock. There are pockets of marshland between and high hedges. Some of the walls here are made from large quartz stones moved from the open fields, where they work their way up through the soil. Hares live here, buzzards and other hawks sit on telegraph poles looking for movement in the grass, made by a rabbit or a field mouse. Foxes, pheasants and partridges can be seen in the long grass along with snakes and many insects, including grasshoppers.
